Cowl Mounting 101:

There are many ways to mount a Whiplash cowl. I would like to show you how I mount mine. All of the hydros have the same nose configuration, so this method will work great on all models.

Step #1: Sand your nose block so it is flush with the top of the engine walls.

Step #2: Notch out a groove in the middle of the nose block. Cut the nose approximately 1/8" deep x 2" wide, tapered to nothing as it goes forward. A small hand saw and chisel works great for this.

Step #3: Laminate two pieces of 1/16" plywood together with a piece of fiberglass in-between. Glue this to the top of the nose to create a slot where the cowl can slide into.

Step #4: Laminate a piece of reinforced 1/16" plywood to the nose of the cowl, overhanging it at least 1/4". It is better to leave it long and sand to fit after the glue dries.

Finished nose:

Step #5: Drill a couple of holes in the rear of your cowl and install two threaded ball ends. Screw Nylon landing gear straps to the outside engine walls, making sure they are located in front of the ball links. An O'ring will pull the cowl forward into the nose slot, as well as hold the rear section down.

Until next time, happy boating.
